Illustration Friday—Mesmerizing (Turkey Watch)

September 19, 2010

Ellie Mae always sits at the back door watching for critters. She’s mesmerized and it’s “mesmerizing” watching her. She’ll chase almost anything except turkeys and cats. We have a troop of wild turkeys usually six, and sometimes five or even four, which always makes me wonder if one was snagged for supper, until six appear again. And when bad weather approaches there’s always one lone turkey frantically wandering with a hauntingly sad cry in search of its troop. Makes me worry. Anyway, I wish Ellie Mae would chase them, they poop a lot and eat songbird food, but alas, she doesn’t care. After all, she’s a critter dog, not a bird dog. She happily just watches them poop and eat songbird food.

Love this one. The serenity of the scene is easily felt when looking at this painting. I love Ellie Mae! I love that she doesn’t bother turkeys or cats. Koty could fill in for her there! He love to chase geese, squirrels, cats, skunks, rats, opossums and mice! We have a critter-free yard! I have got to bring him up there sometime to fish with Ellie Mae, he’d be so very happy!

    See you soon, Pen!

Whimsical and I warm to it because I have a Lucy that sits at the door like Ellie.

My sister has a springer spaniel named Lucy — she may be one of the world’s sweetest dogs, as I’m certain yours must be too!

A little bit of Hazard in that dog

Hazard! Oh, our childhood puppers! Wish you could meet Ellie Mae — not a mean bone in her body. She would have loved Macy!

Ahh….turkeys, as you know, are near and dear to our hearts here over on Bond Street. We understand the pooping dilemma very well…and isn’t Ellie Mae just the most gentle pooch…letting them be no matter what they do. 🙂

When the turkeys visit my yard, the cats come in-fast -even though they’re safe behind an enclosure. Don’t blame Ellie Mae, those turkeys are formidable! Love the she’s peering out the door.

*should read “the way” she’s peering out the door. The turkeys got me all flustered.

What an endearing painting. And I love your commentary about Ellie May and the turkeys.
My dog would think he’d died and gone to heaven, should he see some. I absolutely love this little painting. !!! 🙂

Penny, What a lovely little watercolor of sweet Ellie Mae. I thought all dogs would chase birds, so I figured that as long as I have my chickens that a dog would be a problem. But maybe….
