Illustration Friday—Beginner

May 10, 2011

Make no mistake, I’m not a fan of horse racing (I cry every time there’s a start and I don’t relax until I’m certain the track is ambulances free), but I am a huge fan of horse and rider. So when I heard that Rose Napravnik would ride “Pants on Fire” in the 137th Kentucky Derby I had to smile. “Go Rosie, but take care of that fancy pants under you!” I thought. Imagine Rosie as a “beginner” pushing the envelope on her rocking horse winner…

You know me, P. I feel the same way about ‘horse racing.’ I skipped the Derby and any news of it this year. I LOVE your treatment of the theme…ha! I was going to do something horse themed as well relating to beginner dressage but time has gotten away from me. I absolutely LOVE your rocking horse and Rosie’s expressive and enthusiastic movement.

So full of joy! I feel the same way about the horses, but my husband grew up a few miles away from Churchill Downs, so the Kentucky Derby (and more importantly, Kentucky Derby parties) is a family tradition. After the tragedy a couple of years ago, I’m very happy when each horse (and its rider, although I worry more about the horses to be honest) is safely over the finish line.

    Heisann!

You made me remember the rocker my horses are missing. They’re still uncompleted!

Once again a wonderful drawing of yours ;:OD)

Penelope–I love this! The way the horse’s ears flop is so cute–the rider is wonderful–the entire drawing is just charming. I love your artwork. It is so appealing.

    You could illustrate children’s books.
